| Home Page | Gymnocactus is a genus of mostly small cactus from Mexico. They have been merged recently into Turbinicarpus. They are cultivated mostly for the esthetic quality of their spines. All the species have offsets, but they grow slowly and take years to fill up even small containers. Because of their light requirements, if they can't be grown outside, they should be grown in a greenhouse or conservatory. Excessive watering can cause the Gymnocactus to develop cracks.
Gymnocactus horripilus is the largest species, it is heavily clumping and can reach 8 inches in diameter (20 cm).
