Large clusters of edible, red or orange-yellow fruits are borne at the tips of the branches in the summer months. The ovoid fruits are about the size of a hen's egg and have long, soft, fleshy spines covering the surface. The edible portion is the layer of white, melting, subacid pulp that surrounds the rather large seed. In some varieties, the pulp is attached to the seed, in others it is free.
