Origin: Central and southern Europe to western Siberia and central Asia

Growth Habits: Deciduous tree, 40 to 70 feet tall (12-21 m) or more, 25 feet spread (7.5 m); greenish-white bark on young tree, dark and rough on old trees; 3 to 5-lobed leaves, with white, woolly underside, up to 5 inches long (12 cm)

Watering Needs: Regular deep watering

Propagation: Cuttings, suckers

Propagation: Seed or occasionally cutting

  • by semi-hardwood secondary cuttings, in winter. Use outdoor beds.
  • by seeds, in autumn. Germinates at 84-89 degrees F. The seeds can also be harvested in autumn. The usual germination temperature is 84-89 degrees F.

Can be invasive.
Populus alba var. bolleana, also sold as Populus bolleana or Populus alba 'Pyramidalis', has a columnar form and is also prone to send suckers.
