The Golden Spoon is closely related to the Maricao (Byrsonima spicata). It is native to the same area as the "maricao" and also is grown for its edible fruit. The golden spoon varies greatly in form and may be a low shrub or a small tree. The variable-shaped leaves usually are formed in whorls of three. Tea made with its bark is supposed to improve digestion and appetite.
Fruiting Habits:
The yellow, acid fruits are about one-half inch in diameter and are called "Nanche" in Mexico, where they are used in soups or meat stuffings, or are eaten raw.
Culture:
The golden spoon is propagated by seeds. The plants are able to thrive on unproductive soil if it is well drained.
