The genus Michelia is named after a Florentine botanist, Pietro A. Micheli. The species epithet 'doltsopa' is from the Tibetan name.

White, fragrant, long-lasting flowers, 5 to 7 inches in diameter (12-17 cm), with 12 petals, in winter.
Fruiting Habits:
Brown, cone-like fruits, 3 to 4 inches long (7.5-10 cm), ripening in summer, staying on the tree until winter.
