Caraway Thyme

Frost Tolerance: Evergreen in milder climates, hardy to 15° F (-9° C)

Origin: Corsica and Sardinia

Growth Habits: Woody-based perennial, fast growing to 3 to 6 inches tall (7.5-15 cm), 9 to 12 inches spread (22-30 cm); fragrant, oval to lanceolate dark green leaves with hairy margins, 0.25 inch long (6 mm)

Flowers: Pink flowers

Watering Needs: Low to moderate water, prefers soil with low fertility, needs good drainage, root rot in poorly drained soils

Propagation: Seeds in spring or fall, division, softwood cuttings in the spring, semi-hardwood cuttings in summer, layering

Attracts butterflies. The leaves have a strong caraway flavor and are used as a spice. There are a few named varieties with different scents: 'Nutmeg' and 'Lemon Scented'

Blooming Habits:
The Caraway Thyme has heads of tiny tubular clear pink flowers in early summer.

Culture:
Plant 10 to 12 inches apart as a ground cover (25-30 cm).
