Sun Exposure: Part shade to shade, tolerates full sun

Origin: Georgia and Florida, in the coastal plain in wet areas.

Growth Habits: Evergreen small tree or shrub, 8 to 20 feet tall (2.4-6 m); alternate, oval-elliptic, olive green anise-scented leaves, 2.8 to 4.8 inches long (7-12 cm), 1to 2 inches wide (2.5-5 cm)

Watering Needs: Abundant water, more drought tolerant than other Illicium

Propagation: Seed, easy from cuttings, layers

All parts of the plant are toxic.
This species is endangered in Florida.

Blooming Habits:
Unimpressive small, odorless, yellow-green flowers, up to 0.5 inch wide (12 mm), in the axils of the leaves, in late spring (May - June).

Fruiting Habits:
Star-shaped seed capsule, about 1 inch in diameter (2.5 cm). Although the seed capsule is star shaped like the aniseed (Illicium verum), it is not edible.

Culture:
Produces suckers that should be removed to keep it tidy.
