The genus is named after the king Ptolemee Philadelphus (283-247 A.D.) of Egypt.
There are many cultivars, here are some:
'Natchez'- large white flowers.
'Variegata'- leaf with white margin.
'Aureus'- smaller cultivar with golden leaves fading to yellowish green in summer.
Blooming Habits:
Fragrant, 4-petaled, white flowers, 1 inch across (2.5 cm), appearing in May to June after the leaves. The fruit is a dry, persistent, 4-parted capsule, 0.5 inch long (1.2 cm).
