Growth Habits: Deciduous tree, growing rather slowly to 25 to 90 feet tall (7.5-27 m), 80 feet spread (24 m), very old trees can be 150 feet tall (45 m); trunk 24 to 40 inches in diameter (60-100 cm); thin and scaly bark; young shoots covered with reddish-brown down; leathery, 5 to 9-lobed dark green leaves, 3 to 6 inches long (7.5-15 cm) and 2 to 4.4 inches wide (5-11 cm)
Watering Needs: Little water and good drainage, flood resistant
Propagation: Seeds (acorns) best sown in place since the seedling rapidly develops a large taproot
This oak name honors Nicholas Garry of the Hudson's Bay Company.
Fruiting Habits:
The edible acorns are 1 inch long (2.5 cm), with a shallow cup, usually solitary, maturing in a single season.
