Frost Tolerance: No need if the plant is in the shade.

Sun Exposure: Full shade only in the desert. Sun will bleach the leaves

Origin: China

Growth Habits: Evergreen perennial. Leaves up to 3 feet.

Flowers: Purple flowers

Watering Needs: Soil dry to moist but well drained

Propagation: Division in late winter, early spring.

The Cast Iron Plant is named for its tolerance for poor growing conditions. It spreads in clump and is a good plant for those very shady spaces.

Varieties:
Okame: Deep green leaves with small, very random creamy ochre dots; unusually broad foliage;
Variegata: Deep green leaves striped with irregular white bands. Needs poor soil to keep its stripes.

Culture:
Although extremely tolerant, the Cast Iron Plant does better in light soil rich in organic matters. Responds to feeding in spring and summer. Hose the leaves regularly to keep them dust free.
