Growth Habits: Evergreen bush, spreading to rounded, 5 to 8 feet tall (1.5-2.4 m), 4 to 8 feet spread (1.2 to 2.4 m); simple, alternate, pubescent, pale gray green leaves, up to 2.4 inches long (6 cm), 0.25 inch wide (6 mm)

Watering Needs: Little water when established, withstand alkaline and salty soils, does fine with brackish water

Propagation: Seeds or cuttings

The name 'four wing' refers to the shape of the seed. These seeds are borne in quantities by the female plants. They were ground and used by the natives. Other parts of this shrub have been used also: leaves and young shoots were used in soups and stews, the flowers, and twigs were used to make a yellow dye, and the fruits are edible. The plant is also a fire retardant.

Blooming Habits:
The Chamisa has golden blossoms in summer and early fall.

Culture:
The Four-Wing Saltbush can be sheared for hedges.
