Growth Habits: Clumping around the base, pale green heads up to 1.5 inches in diameter (4 cm), 2 inches in diameter (5 cm); ribs indistinct; 15 to 20 spines, 0.1 to 0.3 inch long (2-7 mm), 4 stronger ones directed upward.

There are a number of forms with flower color varying from brilliant violet to carmine red to yellowish red.

Blooming Habits:
Carmine red campanulate flowers, up to 0.8 inch long and wide (2 cm). Yellow fruits.
