Origin: Northwestern and western Mexico (Chihuahua, Durango, Guerrero, Jalisco, México, Michoacán, Sonora)

Growth Habits: Tree-like, 15 to 20 feet tall (4.5 to 6 m), branching basally; 12 to 14 ribs, sometimes tuberculate; 10 to 14 yellowish acicular spines, 0.4 to 0.6 inches long (1-1.5 cm);

The species is named 'alensis' after the Sierra del Alo in the state of Jalisco.

Blooming Habits:
The flowering area has white or yellowish hair, up to 2 inches long (5 cm). The flowers are purplish.
