Origin: Mexico (Durango, Jalisco, Nayarit)

Growth Habits: Shrub to tree-like, up to 20 feet tall (6 m); new stems are bluish, 0.6 to 1 inch in diameter (1.5-2.5 cm); elliptical leaves, 2.4 to 3.2 in. long (6-8 cm), 1 inch in diameter (2.5 cm); areoles with white hairs; 1 (or 2) grayish spine, 1.2 in. long (3 cm)

Blooming Habits:
Terminal flowers in October to December, yellow with reddish tinge, probably nocturnal. The Tuna de Agua has pear-shaped greenish-yellow fruits, 1.6 to 2 inches long (4-5 cm). The fruits are flavorful, and are used to prepare refreshing drinks.
