Origin: Mexico: Oaxaca, between Nejapa, Juquila, Mixes and Lachiguiri, in rocky soils at 6000 to 7000 feet elevation (2000 m)
Growth Habits: Solitary in the wild, often clumping in cultivation, up to 1.6 inches tall (4 cm), 2 inches wide (5 cm), tuberous roots, 33 to 36 radial spines, 1 to 6 central spines
Watering Needs: Little to no water in winter
Named after the Belgian nursery De Herdt.
Blooming Habits:
Rose to purple flowers in the spring, up to 2 inches in diameter (5 cm), followed by greenish globose fruit
