Home Page | Hatiora is a genus of epiphytic cacti. It contains less than half a dozen species, mostly from Brazil. Although it was known for a sole commonly grown species (the Drunkard Dream - Hatiora salicornoides) It now contains plant that were contained in the genera Epiphyllopsis, Hariota, Pseudozygocactus and Rhipsalidopsis. One of these is the relatively common Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri - the Easter Cactus. Hatioras form masses of stems, generally, 20 inches or less (50 cm). They like a soil rather light and well drained, and can rot if kept cold and soaked. They can also die by lack of water, so their soil should never be too dry. When the airt is dry, they appreciate to be misted with regular water The flowers vary largely in size, from 0.2 inches (5 mm) to over 1 inch (2.5 cm) for the Rhipsalosopsis hybrids. They form on the previous year growth.
They are propagated easily by cuttings that root wherever they touch the ground.
