Growth Habits: Clumping columnar cactus, yellowish green stems, up to 28 inches tall (70 cm), 1.5 inches in diameter (4 cm); young areoles with yellowish felt, 0.2 to 0.3 inch apart (5-8 mm); 7-9 ribs; 1 central spines; 8 or 9 radials with darker, often reddish tips.

There is a great variability of spination in this species. The plant in the second picture is sold as Echinocereus salm-dyckianus.

Blooming Habits:
Echinocereus scheeri ssp. gentryi has spiny, pink flowers with pale throats, up to 3 inches in diameter (8 cm).
