The genus name 'Chirantodendron' comes from the Greek for 'tree with a hand-shaped flower'. The epithet 'pentadactylon' comes from the Greek for '5-fingered'.

Fruiting Habits:
5-lobed woody, woolly, dehiscent capsule, about 5 inches long (12 cm). They contain black ovoid seeds, 0.2 inch long (5 mm), 0.15 inch across (3 mm), with a yellow caruncle.
