Frost Tolerance: Hardy to 30°F (-1°C) for very short period of times

Sun Exposure: Full sun, tolerates reflected heat.

Origin: Tropical Africa

Growth Habits: Deciduous caudiciform tree, 80 feet tall or more (24 m), trunk up to 40 feet wide (10 m)

Watering Needs: Moderate water, fairly drought resistant

Propagation: Seeds, difficult by cuttings

Baobab is characteristic of Africa, its massive swollen trunk is very recognizable. The young specimens like the one on the pictures have simple leaves, as they grow the leaves become digitate.

The genus was named after Michel Adanson, an 18th century French naturalist

Blooming Habits:
The baobab has large white flowers followed by an edible fruit. In Africa, the fruit is used for animal feed or to make a drink.
