Origin: Southeastern United States coastal plain, from Virginia, to Florida, to Texas

Growth Habits: Evergreen shrub or small tree, up to 15 to 26 feet tall (4.5 to 8 m); light gray smooth bark; dark green leaves, 0.5 to 1.5 inches (12-37 mm), with shallow rounded teeth and pale green underside.

  • by semi-hardwood secondary cuttings, in autumn. Apply IBA TALC 3000 PPM. Use intermittent mist. Root in 12-16 weeks. Wound cuttings. Acid mix helps rooting (pH: 5.0-6.0).

'Stokes Dwarf' is a dwarf form of the Yaupon, 18 inches tall (45 cm), 3 feet spread (90 cm).

Blooming Habits:
A typical Ilex, the Yaupon is dioecious. The male plants have numerous small greenish white flowers in clusters, while the female plants have mostly solitary flowers. They bloom in late spring (April to May). The fruit is a dark orange to red,berry-like drupe, 0.24 to 0.32 inch in diameter (0.6 to 0.8 cm), ripening in the fall (September and October)

Culture:
Tolerates alkaline soil.
